Step 1: Read Chapter 3 of the textbook, with a particular focus on motor skills, sensory, cognitive (Piagetian stages, information processing, and memory), language, and emotional development, and forming attachments.
Step 2: Think about your own development and the songs and stories (e.g. “nursery rhymes” “fairy tales” “parables” “lullabies”), books and toys that were part of your very early years. If you aren’t comfortable using yourself or if you prefer, use the experience of someone you know well or look for songs, books, and toys on websites that market to parents of infants.
In the first part of your post, tell us the song, story, book, or toy. If possible, provide an internet link to it so we can watch/listen/read/see it. If not possible, give us a summary or description of it and the general context of when and how it is used. If it is from your life (or someone you know), how do you recall hearing, seeing or using it? If it was from a website, how did the developers envision it being used? This part should be at least 150 words.
Next, analyze the story, song or toy from a developmental perspective. Make sure your answer is informed by the textbook’s information. It should be clear you read and understood Chapter 3 and are applying that information. Tell us how the song/story/toy helps with infant development. Does it impact physical and sensory development, language development, attachment, infant cognition and/or infant emotional development? How? Support your answers with specific examples and textbook information. You should have at least 200 words of information and analysis in this part.
Step 3: As you answered the steps above, what was most surprising or interesting to you? What are at least two things you are curious about or would like more information on? Ask things your fellow students can help you research and find out more about, that go above and beyond the textbook’s information. You should have at least 50-100 words for this part of your post.
Ready to post: When you are ready, click the topic title and once you are in, click on the blue “start a new thread button” to write your post. Remember to use general writing rules and spellcheck (the checkmark with an ABC in the lower right of the textbox) before clicking “Post.” When you are finished, add a title in the “Subject” line, and then click “Post”. Your post will appear in the string of posts. To read a classmate’s post, simply click on the title and scroll down. As you read them, a blue line to the left will disappear to help you keep track of the ones you have read. To reply to another’s post after reading it, simply click the “reply to post” blue button.
Step 4: After posting your first post, copy and paste it into a Word or pdf document and submit a copy to the Paper Copy of Songs and Stories discussion post Assignment folder (this helps me retain your work after the course ends and check for academic dishonesty) before the end of the discussion. Only your first post, not the reply posts, is needed.
