Your Research Paper allows you to explore a contemporary social issue using the knowledge and skills gained in this course. You will research two ‘sides’ or different viewpoints on two different ways of defining or framing the issue, with two different beliefs in the reason for the issue and ways to solve the issue. By choosing multiple viewpoints, you are getting a better understanding of the social issue as well as the ways we define issues, or ‘construct’ social problems.
You will have an opportunity to work with your peers. You can share research, ideas, questions, and answers with your Peer Review Group as you do your research. After completing your research, you will write a paper that presents your research and focuses on how you define the issue, including framing the cause and presenting solutions. In doing so, you will also discuss the validity of the sources you used in researching the issues and what you think of their claims.
You will post a very rough draft of your paper on your Peer Review Discussion Board. This should be more than an outline but less than a finished paper. Your Peers will review your posted draft and will have a chance to ask questions about your research and your conclusions and offer ideas, terms, or topics that they think fit into your paper. Peer review will NOT include a review of style, grammar, spelling, format, or quality of the draft. You will use these Reviews to finalize your final paper – you should incorporate feedback as you deem appropriate.
Important: You must complete all four steps prior to the Final Paper in order to receive a grade for your Final Paper. These steps are: 1) Proposal, 2) Annotated Bibliography, 3) Submitting a Draft for Peer Review on your assigned Peer Discussion Board, 4)and Peer Reviewing (posting your feedback) each of the papers your assigned peers have posted. You need to incorporate the Peer Reviews feedback into your final paper (use their suggestions and feedback as appropriate).
Your final paper will consist of the following parts:
Introduction of your topic including the issue, data about how big of an issue it is, how many people it affects, or why it is important.
Present both viewpoints or ways the issue is framed, from your research. You should clearly present two viewpoints/framing of the issues.
Analyze the two viewpoints. You can analyze each when you present them or you can present both and then analyze both. Make sure your analysis of the issues is grounded in what you have learned in the course and from your research. Include a discussion of their proposed solutions.
Conclusion: What is the right way to understand this issue – which viewpoint/frame (or perhaps you combine them depending on the viewpoints) is the best way to construct this issue? Which solution or solutions should we use and why?
