Literature Review –

A literature review is a very important tool that helps you to organize the research that has been done on a subject or problem that you may be experiencing.While you may not do a formal written review for every problem you address, the formal written review is a good tool for future reference to remind you of what you have learned about solving a particular problem in your professional capacity.
Your literature review will be 8 – 10 pages in length. This means that it should be no less than 8 pages and no more than 10 pages. You should use a Cover page and References page which are not counted in your page length requirement. Endnotes, footnotes, and headers do not count for page length and may cause you to fall short if not accounted for.
You should have a minimum of 15 academic sources cited in your references.
You will choose from one of the following subspecialties, as identified as the classic subspecialties by Guy and Rubin (2015) to focus your literature review:
Budgeting – Human Resource Management – Public Finance – Planning – Ethics – Leadership
You will also need to rely upon traditional Public Administration scholarly journals that include Public Administration Review and Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory.
Your review should be structured with an introduction that explicitly tells your reader what you are doing. Next you should provide an understanding of the areas of public administration. Then you will transition to the area of interest for the literature review.
Your syllabus clearly outlines how your literature review assessment will be executed. It is very important that you review the grading rubric to understand what is expected.

Your written assignment should be typed and double spaced with 12-point font and one-inch margins top, bottom, and side using the Chicago Manual of Style. All sources must be properly, thoroughly, and consistently cited. Careful attention to grammar, spelling, and the mechanics of presentation is expected. I have provided a number of sources for you to help guide you in constructing your literature review. Research Literature Reviews have been listed in the syllabus under the Reading Materials. These are full research projects and not indicative of how your review should look as you only have a limited space to write. They are intended to give you a basic understanding of the literature that exists on a specific topic. Use this information along with the articles listed under Recommended Readings on the syllabus to help form your literature review. But do not limit yourself to these sources. Google scholar and the Lamar library search engine are great sources.

DO NOT cite a literature review in your literature review. You should always read and cite the original source article.
Below, I have posted my literature review from a research study that I presented in Washington DC in March 2019. You should use the same structure for your reflection essays and your literature review. Your review will be different in content because this review is written for a specific research project, but you should use this one as a template for proper citation and reference structure. There are journal articles, books, and edited books in the references for your review. Also pay attention to how citations are used and the minimal use of quotes. You will notice that my introduction is four paragraphs and it is explicit in telling the reader what will be done and the importance. In other words, why should they read. You will notice that there is no citation in the second paragraph, but I am not making a statement, I am providing an understanding of the journal issue. You should have no need to do this in your literature review.
