Assignment #2-Due Saturday February 20 by midnight

For this assignment, please answer the following questions based on the readings provided for you in the weekly folder.

You must use at least 3 APA citations/references when completing these answers. You can get information on APA citations/references in the “Course Information” folder in blackboard. Answers must be uploaded as a separate document, and please save the file as .pdf or a .doc or a docx, because Blackboard cannot read other files.

Answers need not be an essay, but must completely answer the question. If you can answer the question in one word, that is fine. However you still must include a citation for each answer, citing from which source you found the answer.

What method of hiring employees was instituted to eliminate political influence, favoritism, nepotism and bias?

What are some of the qualities of a leader as represented in your readings?

Name three features of a bureaucracy:

What is “shared leadership”? Describe and discuss some recent examples of it in policing.

Discuss the special problems that must be dealt with in organizing a police department that operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

Search the Internet and find personnel information for your local police or sheriff’s department. Determine how many sworn and nonsworn personnel are employed in that agency.

You have been appointed an assistant to your local police chief or sheriff. She tells you that the department has a leadership crisis in its supervisory ranks and asks you to advise her on what qualities she should look for when appointing new supervisors. How would you advise her?

You have been appointed the new commissioner of the Anycity Police Department. Anycity is a suburban city 60 miles from a major U.S. city; it has a population of 30,000 people and a police department of 100 officers. The major police problems in Anycity are disorderly teens making unnecessary noise at night, parking and traffic problems in the commercial district during business hours, and daytime residential burglaries. The former commissioner’s assistant tells you that the department has no organizational chart, no written rules and procedures, and “has always done a great job in the past.” Anycity’s city manager, however, tells you that the former commissioner was incompetent and that the department is totally disorganized and ineffective. You review the department’s personnel records and find that of the 100 officers in the department, 30 percent are patrol officers, 30 percent are detectives, and 40 percent are supervisors. In view of what you learned in this chapter, would you reorganize the department? Why or why not? If you would reorganize, how would you do it?
