1). In “The Management of Grief,” Shaila describes herself as “trapped between two modes of knowledge” (par. 84). Write an essay exploring whether and how this claim holds true both for Shaila and for Mr. Kapasi in “The Interpreter of Maladies.” What “two [or more] modes of knowledge” inform the characters’ thinking and behavior, and how so? In what ways is each character “trapped” and in what ways liberated or even empowered by that situation? (p. 511)
Writing Process, Explication & Quotes (apply these notes to your draft):
The above topics are topics, with questions to trigger your scrutiny of the stories: you will need to present a specific, focused argument in your essay– it may take you a few drafts before you determine what your argument is.
Think of your audience as someone who is familiar with the stories—don’t spend space & time retelling the whole story, or summarizing what is apparent. Present your argument early in your essay—usually at the end of the first paragraph; subsequent paragraphs should present strong topic sentences that link back to the main argument and provide specific examples to support the argument.
An analysis paper includes explication of relevant passages from the text (textual evidence). Use specific examples from the story to support your argument. Always remember to discuss a passage in detail if it is worth quoting. Use direct quotes sparingly, and when necessary (don’t “pad” the essay by using a lot of long quotations).
The essay should be 5-6 pages—this means at least 5 full pages. If you are having trouble fulfilling the length requirement, dive in and explore the story in more detail.
Please use MLA format when quoting from the stories; re-read the essay on Carver’s “Cathedral” (pp. 45-47) as an example of how MLA format is used correctly—note: this author has included paragraph #s in the parenthesis— instead, you should include page numbers. MLA format means that you will use in-text citations and include a Works Cited at the end. Not including proper MLA documentation—within the text of the essay and in the Works Cited will result in a loss of points.
You do not need to consult any “outside” sources (sources beyond the story you are writing about) for this essay. If you do use outside sources, please use MLA format for citations.
