You may even want to talk about ways in which the theory has been used in your topic or in other topics previously, really proving to the reader that you’ve selected a relevant and thoughtful behavioral theory for your issue. You’ll then move on to the programmatic activities, really describing things like recruiting or marketing of your program so that individuals in the community even know it exists and any sort of touch-points that you have with your target population. How do you plan to move them toward those immediate objectives and towards those behavioral objectives, and ultimately towards the health objectives? The reader needs to get a great sense of your program in this section. The last piece of this section is going to be the innovation piece. We need to hear why your program is fund-worthy, really. Is it new? Is it tapping into elements or issues that we haven’t explored prior in your health area? Is it using different modalities that have never been used in your target population? Are you tailoring or targeting your program in a specific way that’s going to make it more successful than any other programs that have occurred prior? To write this section successfully, you need to consult the literature. We need to see you cite other programs. If you feel like no other programs have been conducted in your topic area, you might want to think about talking about any other policies or even cultural events or shifts that may have impacted your health topic. But in general, the reader needs to feel that you’re not reinventing the wheel of what’s been done in other programs but instead, improving that wheel. To do so, you need to describe some of those other programs or efforts. The last section of the paper is the discussion section. You have a few goals in this section. First, we certainly want you to step out of the hypothetical funding proposal realm and into a more academic space where we want you to describe the strengths and weaknesses of your selected behavioral theory. Now, you may not share those weaknesses as readily in a real-world proposal, but we want to hear from you. We want to know what really worked in your theory, or maybe what was a little bit of an ill fit. We don’t expect theory to be a 100% perfect match to your health issue and your target population. But share those strengths and share those weaknesses. We then want you to discuss at least one other behavioral theory that you could have used for your program. And share some details about how that program, on a whole or, in terms of specific activities, might have looked a little bit different than the one that reader just read about. Define that theory for the reader so that they have a good sense of what this new alternative behavioral theory looks like. And then move on from the theory discussion to the actual limitations of your program. So no program is perfect. There’s always reasons why it may not be successful, or we may not see the level of effectiveness that we hoped for. Sharing these is really showing good forethought and showing a comprehensive assessment of the problem and understanding your target populations and how public health programs work. It’s not a weakness to share limitations. So share a few areas that could really be a little bit of a hiccup for your program. Lastly, we want you to round out the paper with a concluding paragraph or paragraphs that touch on the intended implications of your program, maybe the high level reasons why it may be successful, and leave your reader on that high note where they feel we’ve heard about some limitations, but now I’m being reminded as to why this program is potentially effective and impactful in hugely at-risk target populations for an important health topic, really rounding out your paper nicely and leaving your reader in this comfortable space where they feel compelled to fund your hypothetical program. Remember to use careful citation styles, either AMA or APA. Use them well, and consult various resources to ensure you’re doing each type of source appropriately. Make sure you have that title page.
