“Ethics are generally accepted values and actions that are used appropriately by a person in different areas of life. Leaders have an obligation to influence the followers by their ethical behavior to do a common good (Northouse, 2018). In an organization, the employees always look up to their leaders as role models or mentors for creating an ethical work climate. Therefore, it is highly significant for future nurse practitioners to identify our core leadership ethics. This discussion aims to explore my ethical leadership style and its influence on my nurse practitioner role.

According to Huber (2018), nurses are legally liable for all their actions in their professional practice for taking care of patients. Nurses are expected to adhere to the professional and institutional code of ethics. Moreover, for leaders, there are some ethical leadership elements that inspire other employees in an organization. In this discussion, I used the Ethical Leadership Style Questionnaire to identify my core leadership ethics and how it relates to other styles of ethical leadership (Northouse, 2018). Ten different ethical environments are stated in the questionnaire and it requires my response of what I would do during each of the dilemmas as a leader. There were six ways of ethical leadership responses, such as duty, utilitarianism, virtue, caring, egoism, and justice ethics. I got the result of this test by adding the number of times I selected each ethical style. It was surprising that I preferred different ways of ethics to meet the varying needs of each situation. My most preferred ethical leadership styles are duty ethics and justice ethics with a score of four. In duty ethics, I follow a set of moral obligations and perform my duty accordingly, whereas, justice ethics focuses on fair treatment of the staff and equally share the benefits and problems of decisions with all the staff involved. Justice ethics was proved as an effective ethical leadership style in a descriptive- correlational study conducted by Haghighinezhad et al. (2019). A sample of 284 intensive care unit nurses was given questionnaires to examine the impact of their nurse manager and organizational justices on their moral distress. The study result showed that organizational justice culture decreased the moral distress among the staff nurses. On the other hand, at two times I preferred to do what is best for the majority of the people and for their happiness by scoring two for the utilitarian ethics. However, I did not show any interest in virtue, caring, and egoism ethics. After doing this exercise, I realized that my personality is reflected in my preferred style of ethical leadership.

In my role as a nurse practitioner, I foresee multiple opportunities to apply my ethical leadership styles. I believe that each ethical style has its own merits and demerits. It is the leader who should use these ethical values that are appropriate in the given situations. I like to treat everybody equally with respect and that is why one of my preferred styles of ethics is justice ethics. According to Northouse (2018), in the justice style, a leader gives more priority to fairness in decision making. Also, I would like to bring caring ethics in my leadership behavior. Northouse (2018) believes that ethics are practiced basically to promote good relationships with other people. I would like to be kind and helpful to my staff and patients. I can forgive people and offer my staff a second chance for any improvements in their work lives. I believe this will enable me to create a trusting bond with my colleagues.”

“In the medical and nursing field, ethics play a significant role everyday. Dealing with the health of people and having the responsibility of improving their outcomes, healthcare professionals have to be prepared to make decisions showing ethical leadership. Ethics is the set of values and morals an individual has. Ethical leadership is the influence of a moral person who moves others to do the right thing in the right way for the right reasons (Northouse,2018). A leader has the challenging task of balancing relationships between followers and displaying fairness, caring and honesty. In this post, I will speak about the results I had from the questionnaire and provide a brief analysis on what these values mean to me, supported by scholarly research. I will also talk about how these values will influence me in my future role as a Nurse Practitioner.

In this questionnaire I had to choose how I would react in ten different scenarios from an ethical standpoint. I have to admit that a few of them were hard to choose, especially the scenario with an employee having a sick child and reporting more hours that he actually worked. There is a thin line between doing the right thing and being a good person. The highest results I got were duty and justice, followed by virtue. The results of this questionnaire did not surprise me. I always seek a solution that benefits every person in a group and if that is not possible then I try to minimize the burden on the ones that have been affected the most by a decision. I can’t see myself punishing someone who has significant issues in their personal lives. On the other hand as a leader I have to keep everyone reminded that there are rules that have to be followed. In a qualitative study conducted by Esmaelzadeh (2017), ethical decision making in the nursing practice was examined and how it affects nursing leaders to manage their workload. Twenty Iranian nurses were interviewed, using purposive sampling. The results of this study showed that the majority of participants consider ethical sensitivity as a valuable attribute for nursing leaders.
In my future role as a Nurse Practitioner, I am confident that I will utilize all the ethical leadership skills that will ensure balance of relationships between other staff members, displaying fairness and honesty but most importantly, I want other people to know that I will always make decisions for the benefit of my patient’s health. It is vital to have new generations of healthcare providers, ethically prepared to deliver patient care but also treat everyone the same. I believe that in our profession, there is no room for decisions that benefit only one person. A healthcare professional should always seek for the most ethical solution and if he/she realizes that there are other staff members who are not moral, it should be his duty to set the example for that group of staff members.”
